What we are looking for:

As the Forest Management Technician you will perform a wide variety of tasks in the areas of timber sale preparation, fuels reduction, and timber stand improvements through thinning, piling, and burning of fuels. This position is supervised by the Central Oregon District Federal Forest Restoration (FFR) Unit Forester and will function as a team member of an FFR crew. This crew will work to achieve the goals and objectives given to them by the Central Oregon District FFR Unit Forester. The primary function of this position is to accomplish additive work on USFS National Forest projects. The FFR Crew will assist the National Forests in accomplishing their management goals including, but not limited to, timber sale planning, pre-commercial thinning, piling, prescribed burning, both piles and broadcast, and brushing roads. This crew will also implement all-lands, cross-boundary work to achieve forest restoration on a landscape scale. In addition, this position will perform fire suppression duties as needed. The person in this position is expected to have or be able to acquire FFT2 or higher ICS fire qualification(s) upon hire, successfully complete ICS S-212 and be able to perform firefighting duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Eighteen months of experience working in the field of forestry such as timber sale prep, fuels reduction, timber stand improvements, reforestation.

OR
Associate Degree in Forestry, Forest Engineering, Forest Recreation, Fire Protection or a related natural resource field of study

OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience..

NOTE: Some positions may require a Public Herbicide Applicators License after appointment.

Note:  Driver’s License Check – This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout.  If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to work as a part of an FFR crew in selecting, cutting, bucking, limbing, pruning, stacking and burning to restore forest health and vigor.
  • Ability to use a chain saw, pruning saws, felling axes, and various hand tools to meet timber stand improvement objectives.
  • Ability to perform data collection to support planning for timber stand improvement projects, such as stand exams, timber cruising, timber stand inventory, wildlife habitat recognition, tree species and structure composition, fuel loading, tree and plant species identification, water resource mapping, and unit boundary identification.
  • Ability to perform wildland fighting activities by serving as member on hand crew.
