POSITION SUMMARY

COIC is looking for a passionate hardworking individual who is looking to coach and mentor at risk youth through the medium of teaching life skills and the value of hard work. This is a salaried position at $3,833.00 – $6,721.00/Monthly, DOE and Qualifications. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with youth and young adults and will have a background in motivating, mentoring or coaching individuals facing barriers to success. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT

COIC provides an individualized educational program that empowers youth to achieve academic success. We do this in partnership with local school districts, providing educational services in an alternative high school setting to students ages 14-21. Our program supports students in seeking credit recovery and completing their GED or High School Diploma. COIC also provides a Work-Education, a work-experience program that combines classroom education with community and natural resource projects.

JOB PURPOSE

Mentor, coach, and assist youth toward achieving personal growth and success. Work with local school districts and numerous local partners as part of the COICs alternative education team to recapture youth who have or are at risk of dropping out of regular school. Responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing employment and training opportunities for enrolled youth aged 16-24.

During the Spring and Fall months supervise and lead a team of 3-5 youth, working on a variety of outdoor labor-intensive projects, 3 days per week.

During the Summer months, lead and supervise a team of youth full time for 8 weeks.

FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a solid skills training program for youth assigned to the case manager’s caseload.
  • Responsible for carrying out work assignments ensuring that work is performed in a safe manner and with quality outcomes;
  • Responsible for enrolling eligible youth into both federally and state-funded grant opportunities, carrying out all associated case management duties;
  • Supervise, lead and mentor youth as they work in the field to earn school credits in a variety of community service and natural resources work projects;
  • Provide necessary case management services, including follow up services to youth including paperwork from enrollment to termination for those youth who are enrolled concurrently in the WIOA Title 1B program;
  • Develop and place youth in the local community in paid internships;
  • Provide regular follow-up on placements to evaluate student progress;
  • Work with classroom instructors to ensure youth are making progress towards their educational goals, COIC programs, local high schools, and other local partner organizations;
  • Assist with conferences and evaluation of each student’s progress;
  • Develop and teach career search and work readiness classes for COIC youth;
  • Assist youth in becoming work-ready, helping youth work past barriers to make them more employable in the future;
  • Work under the direct supervision of the WIOA E&T Youth Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
A high school diploma and two years of relevant experience in a related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field may be substituted. Must have one (1) year’s supervisory experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to clearly communicate in person or over the telephone.
Vision abilities required by this job include close vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Must have the ability to lift 75 pounds, and be able to work in inclement weather.
Will be required to drive a motor vehicle to travel to various work sites.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work outdoors in seasonal weather conditions as well as working in a typical office environment, with regular travel to project sites within the community. Some travel between offices, to training/staffing events.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must pass a criminal background check;
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test;
  • Must have a valid Oregon drivers license and access to a private vehicle or equivalent means of transportation for travel between work sites;
  • Must complete an Oregon Department of Education fingerprinting and criminal record check and agree to release that information to the Department of Education;
  • Must maintain client and agency confidentiality.
