Position Title: Seasonal Outside Services Crew
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Assistant Director of Maintenance
JOB DEFINITION
Under direct supervision, the Seasonal Outside Services Crew performs a variety of semi-skilled grounds maintenance and landscaping tasks. The role includes responsibilities for the upkeep of exterior grounds and facilities, seasonal preparations, and routine maintenance of equipment and infrastructure. Tasks vary by season but consistently focus on ensuring safe, well-maintained, and functional school grounds.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assist with seasonal tasks, such as leaf removal in fall or snow/ice management in winter, as applicable.
- Clean and maintain sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways.
- Maintain lawns using hand mowers, tractor-pulled gang mowers, sod-cutters, edgers, fertilizer spreaders, weed eaters, and other hand or power tools.
- Till, seed, plant, transplant, and fertilize lawns and landscaped areas as needed.
- Operate light gas or diesel-powered equipment, including light trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, and rototillers.
- Load and deliver furniture, building materials, or supplies as directed.
- Perform routine maintenance such as installing fences, digging ditches, laying pipe, moving bleachers, and hauling trash.
- Prepare athletic areas for events, including lining fields and setting up/storing bleachers.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned by the Grounds Crew Lead.
Working Conditions
The work is primarily outdoors and involves frequent exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. Routine duties may require handling and mixing toxic materials with inherent risks of spillage and exposure. Operating vehicles and equipment across district sites involves travel-related hazards. The employee frequently lifts materials and equipment exceeding 50 pounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge:
- Operations, methods, tools, equipment, materials, and terminology for grounds maintenance and landscaping.
- Maintenance and repair of grounds equipment and irrigation systems.
- Proper layout and marking of athletic fields.
- Occupational safety hazards and precautions.
Skills and Abilities:
- Safely use tools and equipment for grounds maintenance.
- Apply safety precautions during maintenance tasks and equipment operation.
- Follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Work effectively as an individual or as part of a team.
- Respond quickly to emergency maintenance situations.
- Communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and writing in alignment with educational standards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Effective oral communication skills and the ability to understand technical instructions.
- General knowledge of technical procedures or work activities related to grounds and facility maintenance.
- Working knowledge of school district policies may be required.
Certification and Licensing
This position requires adherence to federal requirements for a drug-free workplace and any necessary certifications or licensing for equipment operation.
