Primary Purpose

The Director of Tutoring and Testing is responsible for the administration of an established tutoring program that serves the Central Oregon Community College (COCC) student needs on the Bend, Redmond, Madras and Prineville Campuses. Also responsible for COCC’s Testing services including COCC student and other professional certification testing available via Pearson VUECLEP, Certiport. Serve as the chief examiner and resource for the GED testing program at COCC.

Central Oregon Community College is seeking a collaborative, student-centered Director of Tutoring and Testing to lead and grow essential academic support services across our Bend, Redmond, Madras, and Prineville campuses.
In this role:
  • You will oversee a well-established tutoring program and a regional testing center that supports COCC students, community members, and professional certification programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   • Ability to assess tutoring needs and determine appropriate service level and offerings to support students in different COCC subject areas.
  • Ability to lead, supervise, evaluate and prioritize assignments for all tutoring and testing staff members.
  • Ability to maintain methods of tutor accountability to achieve a reliable, ethical and responsive service for faculty, students and community members.
  • Ability to evaluate and adjust tutoring services to balance academic support with long-term student retention.
  • Ability to pass annual certification exams as test center supervisor for multiple vendors as well as hire, train and certify a staff of test proctors who are part-time, temporary/hourly hires.
  • Ability to provide ongoing training and re-training for a team of test proctors on high-stakes testing procedures, ensuring compliance and minimizing institutional liability.
  • Ability to evaluate market demand and feasibility for computer-based testing services within the local service area.
  • Ability to determine how to serve the COCC students and all other regional test takers in an affordable and equitable fashion.
  • Ability to address potential academic and testing integrity violations in accordance with institutional and other testing policies.
  • Ability to effectively balance testing demand within limited space constraints.
  • Ability to track usage of the Tutoring and Testing services and analyze data related to student retention efforts.
  • Ability to use office equipment. Knowledge and skill in software and hardware for word processing, Excel, PowerPoint and Computer Aided Instruction (CAI).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter.
  • Ability to hire and mentor a diverse team that respects each other’s differences.
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Ability to effectively manage and assess departmental budgets and do fiscal forecasting.

Ergonomic Requirements

Typical office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. However, a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends and recurring late/early hours is expected, as needed, due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Work on a computer screen more than 50 percent of time. Must be able to kneel, stoop, crawl, or crouch for one percent of the time. Must be able to guide, feeding materials into proper position for two percent of the time. Position involves extended standing and some lifting under 40 pounds for 20 percent of the time. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Requirements

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, communications, business or related field required.
Experience
Total of six years’ experience, including:
  • Two years of experience in developing/leading initiatives and managing budgets.
  • Two years of working in an education environment, serving students.
  • Two years of supervisory experience, including hiring, training, evaluating, and scheduling staff.

Preferred Qualifications

Education
  • Master’s degree in education, communications, business or related field.
Experience
  • Experience working in tutoring in an educational environment.
  • Experience working in testing in an education environment.
  • Professional work experience with Pearson VUE, Certiport, and/or CLEP testing.
  • Professional work experience at a community college or university.
