Deschutes County is accepting positions for a Permit Technician. This position will be responsible for issuing permits for the building and environmental soils divisions, collecting fees based upon a set schedule, disseminating zoning information, and responding to inquiries and complaints from the public pertaining to the planning, building, and environmental soils divisions. Position provides direct customer service in coordinating permit applications, issuing permits, scheduling inspections, and advising customers in detail on the processes and procedures for that division.

$3,770.37 to $5,052.65 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Salary normally starts at the first step. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Three years of progressively responsible clerical or secretarial experience which includes experience working with the general public.
Must have knowledge in the following:
- General understanding of the Building and sanitation permit and zoning application processes.
- Mathematical calculations necessary in determining fees.
- Considerable knowledge of record keeping and bookkeeping systems.
- Office procedures and practices.
Must have a demonstrated ability to:
- Make routine calculations rapidly and accurately.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicants, fellow employees, supervisors and the general public at all times.
- Tactfully answer inquiries from the public.
- Read property descriptions.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver’s license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
Must have the ability to work in an office that is environmentally controlled; possess sufficient hand coordination to perform keyboarding and data entry; arm/ hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment; and an ability to sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, stand, grasp, talk, hear, see, and lift up to 10 pounds on an occasional basis.
